South Africa’s newest Powerball lotto millionaire has finally claimed his prize. The elusive R102m PowerBall jackpot winner has come forward a week after the winning draw.
“The PowerBall winner has stepped forward,” said Thembi Tulwana, spokesperson for the National Lottery operator Gidani. She said the money has been paid into the winner’s bank account.
“The jackpot winner is a young transport entrepreneur in his 20s, and with this cash, he will expand his transport business. He plans to take it easy for a while then later expand his business,” said Tulwana. “He will not leave his job at the moment.”
The jackpot winner signed his name all over his winning ticket for fear of losing it.
“He never thought he would win but had always hoped for the best. He is not a regular player, he told us he only plays when there is a big jackpot,” Tulwana said.
“This is the highest jackpot in the history of the South African National Lottery,” she said.
Lotto money that is won and not claimed is divided, 50% goes to charity and 50% is retained by Gidani for marketing purposes.
